Absolutely not! We treat patients 55+ years of age!

Clear aligners and traditional braces serve the same purpose and work in similar ways to straighten teeth, fill in spaces and correct bite and alignment. Both methods apply steady pressure to teeth, slowly shifting each tooth into proper alignment.

The differences between the two orthodontic options are vast. For most patients, the primary difference is appearance. Clear aligners are see-through plastic trays, which fit snugly and discreetly. In addition to their  appearance and comfortable fit, clear aligners also make oral hygiene, while realigning teeth, easier. Since the trays simply pop onto your teeth, they can be easily removed at mealtimes and for brushing and flossing. The ability to remove trays is most often viewed as a benefit to clear aligners.

The ability, however, does have its drawbacks, as this often means some individuals do not always adhere to their schedules, leaving trays out when they should be worn. Traditional braces have also evolved, and now offer “almost invisible” options instead of the usual, very visible, stainless steel brackets. For the less “disciplined” person who will struggle  frequently to use the trays, the traditional braces can be a great option. Traditional braces are also a more affordable option.

This is very dependent on the type of treatment you require. Some people may only need six months of treatment, but for most people, it can usually take 1 to 2 years.

No, orthodontic treatment doesn’t hurt, although at various stages throughout your treatment you may experience some discomfort.

This is usually around the time you have your braces tightened or you are given your next set of aligners. This discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol.

Yes, we recommend you continue to see your dentist for your regular check-ups while receiving orthodontic treatment. This will help to ensure your teeth remain clean and healthy throughout treatment.

These days, clinicians see and treat many adult patients at our clinic. One of the most popular treatment options for adult patients is Invisalign (aligners) which uses virtually invisible plastic aligners to move your teeth into position. If your orthodontist recommends braces as the best treatment option for you, there are different types that are very discreet and won’t affect your appearance.

Brushing your teeth normally requires a bit more care and time to make sure food gets completely removed from around brackets. An electric toothbrush can help with this. As for flossing, you can thread the floss underneath the crosswire to get between each tooth or consider using a Waterpik.

Some foods cause more damage to braces than others. For example, popcorn kernels get stuck in brackets easily and are a pain to remove. Chewing on ice or hard/sticky candy can bend or break braces. It’s best to slice apples first or avoid them completely when you have braces.

Braces and Invisalign both work great and get the job done! Traditionally, braces are better for more complex/ severe cases such as closing gaps, impacted canines, etc. Invisalign is great for less complex cases and aesthetic purposes. Ask your clinician what your treatment options are before getting started so you’re able to make the best decision for yourself! There are pros and cons to both forms of orthodontic treatment. Ultimately it comes down to what will fit your lifestyle the best!
