Why Use A Night Guard?
Mouthguards are rubber devices that fit over your teeth to protect them from damage caused by harmful habits like grinding and clenching. They’re also commonly used in sports like rugby, football, and cricket to protect your teeth and gums from possible injury.
At our dental practice, we provide patients with custom-fit mouthguards. Night guards are fitted precisely to the contours of your teeth and gums in order to ensure optimal protection and comfort while you use them. Many people are unaware that they grind their teeth at night, but there are often tell-tale signs in the morning such as mouth sores, a tight jaw or a dull headache. Bruxism – the grinding and clenching of teeth – can cause excessive wear on the teeth over time and lead to tooth damage or other oral complications. If you think you might be grinding your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about treatment options.
Getting Starting With Your Night Guard
Our main priority is providing our patients with the best possible service. When you book a consultation and fitting appointment, we’ll talk to you about your specific needs and go over all of the available options. We believe that everyone’s needs are different, so we tailor our services to each individual patient.
We make every mouthguard custom fit to the patient’s teeth, so at your appointment, we take an impression of your teeth. We use a putty that is easily and quickly inserted into the mouth for this purpose. Once we have sent your moulds off to be manufactured in a lab, we will let you know when your new mouthguard arrives.
Receiving Your Night Guard
You will receive your guard approximately two weeks after your first appointment. We will also provide you with a set of instructions on how to use the guard once you have received it.
Additionally, night guards may be worn every night or only during certain activities to help keep the teeth from grinding down and prevent any future problems.
Thoroughly clean your mouthguard after each use to stop the spread of gum disease and other infections. To wash your guard, simply use lukewarm water before taking care to dry it off completely. You can store your mouthguard in its container in a cool, dry place when you’re not using it.
Popular Questions
Most people will still clench and grind their teeth with this device, however, it is intended to save the teeth from damage caused by clenching and grinding. Additionally, it may help alleviate symptoms related to night-time clenching and grinding. For some people, wearing a mouth guard, in general, may make them more aware of when they are clenching or grinding so that they can stop the habit altogether.
Wearing a night guard is important for people who are classified as teeth grinders or people with periodic problems that flare up during times of stress. Often, they wake up to find their jaw sore from clenching and grinding the previous night. Wearing the night guard will help save their teeth from damage in these crucial periods.
It’s not uncommon for mouthguards to feel weird at first, and some people even have trouble sleeping with them. Just like anything new, it will take time to get used to wearing a mouthguard. Give it some time, it is worth it! If you’ve ever had to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses for the first time, you can understand how difficult adjusting feels.
