Fillings
For over a hundred years dentists have used metal fillings to repair cavities; while amalgam restorations are strong, they don’t look the best. However, now we can use composite tooth-coloured fillings thanks to modern materials.
White fillings are resin-based, meaning they are a mixture of plastic and glass. This enables them to perfectly match the colour of your teeth. Not only do white fillings make your smile look great, but they also support the structure of a damaged tooth. By preventing further breakage or sensitivity, white fillings can help you keep your natural teeth healthy for longer!
The length of time a white filling will last depends on how deep the cavity is and where it is in your mouth. To keep decay from forming around the composite filling, brush at least twice daily and visit your dentist for regular checkups.
Root Canal Treatment
If tooth decay is left untreated, it can reach the innermost part of the tooth and infect the soft tissues inside. This will require root canal treatment (or endodontics) to remove the infected pulp. The pulp consists of soft tissue, nerves and blood vessels and can become infected through trauma or deep fillings.
Some symptoms of an infected tooth pulp are discomfort, gum swelling, increased sensitivity to temperature, discolouration, a metallic taste, gum tenderness or swelling.
Although people commonly believe this treatment to be painful, the procedure should be no more uncomfortable than having a normal filling.
Extractions
There are various reasons why you might need a tooth extraction, for example if the tooth is severely damaged or decayed. Extractions are one of the most commonly performed dental procedures and can help to remove bacteria and improve your oral health overall.
After taking a close look at your tooth and gums, your dentists will take some dental X-rays to get a better idea of the damage. Be sure to mention any medications, vitamins or supplements you’re currently taking. With all that information gathered, they can go over different treatment and sedation options with you in more detail.
To begin, your dentist will numb the tooth and gum area with local anaesthesia. Afterwards, they will use dental tools to loosen the tooth before taking it out of its socket.
Popular Questions
Tooth removal may be necessary if you have:
● A very deep infection
● Severe gum disease
● Orthodontics
● Problems with your wisdom teeth
● A broken tooth
Some people’s wisdom teeth become impacted, meaning they may not have enough space in their jaw for them because they are the last teeth to come in. If your dentist suspects this may be a problem for you, they will take x-rays and inspect your wisdom teeth physically to see if there might be future issues. If everything looks fine, your dentist will leave them alone.
Many people believe that root canals are painful when in reality it is the tooth that causes the pain. A root canal is necessary when there is an infection deep within the tooth or decay has become so severe that the natural tooth is at risk. The infection or decay is what leads to discomfort.
Tooth extractions are never fun, but we’ll do everything we can to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. You’ll only feel pressure during the procedure, as we numb the area before starting. It’s normal to experience some discomfort or pain after the procedure when the feeling comes back. We’ll send you home with instructions on how to take care of yourself post-extraction so that recovery is easier.
Although there is no limit to the number of fillings that can be done in one appointment, your dentist may advise you to have more than one filling appointment. If your fillings are next to each other, your dentist may do them both at once.
