Keeping Your Mouth Healthy

A great dental hygiene regime at home is only the first line of defence against gum disease and tooth decay. Sometimes there are hard-to-reach places in your mouth that you can’t get to with regular brushing. Dentists or hygienists have the tools and training necessary to give you a deep clean, as well getting rid of any built-up plaque. They will also be able to check for early signs of gum disease.

Gum Disease

Sugary foods in our diets can lead to plaque build-up on our teeth. While this can be removed with brushing, sometimes plaque can be missed. These areas of plaque and tartar are ideal environments for bacteria to grow. When bacteria is present on the enamel, it causes the surrounding gum tissue to become inflamed. This stage is called gingivitis and is treatable by cleaning away the plaque and removing the bacteria.

Although gum disease is easy to miss because the symptoms are unassuming, it can progress into periodontitis if left untreated. Periodontitis cannot be cured, but professional help from a hygienist or periodontist can prevent it from getting worse.

Prevent Gum Disease With Air Polishing

At our practice, we pride ourselves on using the latest technology for air polishing and gum treatment. Our air polishing treatment is not only great for removing stains but can also help prevent gum disease. Gum disease is often hard to spot because its symptoms are difficult to detect; however, your hygienist will be able to chart any signs of the disease and set out a customised treatment plan depending on the severity of your condition.

We use a Prophy-JetĀ® system which uses a spray of air, water and fine powder. It removes plaque and tartar from teeth while also polishing the surface of the tooth. This treatment is less invasive than drilling and it removes bacteria from in between teeth and around the gum line.

If you have issues with loose teeth, bleeding gums, infection, or receding gums, a Periodontist can help.

What Does A Hygienist Appointment Involve

We pride ourselves on providing the best possible advice for maintaining good oral hygiene at home. Our hygienists will offer tips and tricks on brushing and flossing, as well as recommend the best products to use based on your individual needs. We believe that oral hygiene is essential to a healthy smile, so you can book a hygiene appointment directly without needing to be referred first.

Popular Questions

Every year, over 34,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer and often, it begins as a tiny white or red spot in the mouth that goes unnoticed. It can affect the lips, gums, cheeks tongue and palate. Early detection is key to treatment becoming effective; we offer not only an oral cancer screening during every exam but also state-of-the-art screenings that can detect disease in its earliest stages. However dental visits every six months are crucial for keeping up the fight against oral cancer.

Cavities and gum disease are the most common problems. Both can be prevented with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.

Decay is caused by bacteria that thrive on teeth and feed off the carbohydrates in our diet. The bacteria produce acid that decays the enamel on our teeth. If decay is left untreated, it can cause pain, infection and tooth loss. Protect your teeth against decay by brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, visiting your dentist regularly, and avoiding sugary foods.
